Ease into 2017

If you’re reading this, that means you’ve officially survived 2016, the year during which the Grim Reaper drank too much Red Bull and Spray Tan Voldemort was elected to be our next president. We’re about a week in to the new year, which means you’re supposed to be sprinting down the path to being your fittest, soberest, empathetic-est self, right? Nah. 2016 sucked. If you need to take another week to keep shaking the bad vibes, here are a few ways to ease yourself into the new year:

The outdoor ice rink downtown (701 K Street) is packing up on January 16, and on Friday, January 6, they’re hosting one last big hurrah with ’80s Day from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Skaters are encouraged to dress up and deejays will be spinning classic tunes from the era (here’s hoping there’s a whole lotta Wham! in there). Admission is $6-$12; visit https://godowntownsac.com/events/

On Sunday, January 8, come celebrate what would have been David Bowie’s 70th birthday with a tribute show at Harlow’s Restaurant & Nightclub (2708 J Street) featuring performances from local acts like Bellygunner, Mondo Deco, Peter Petty, Lauren Wakefield and more. Tickets are $10-$12 and the show starts at 6:30 p.m. Visit www.harlows.com to find out more.

On Wednesday, January 11, Capitol Beer and Tap Room (1431 I Street) is hosting its second annual Art of Beer Coloring Contest from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., wherein attendees will be given a coloring sheet and access to beer, and at the end of it, the judges (who will also be drinking) pick out the best one. What better way to take on the upcoming challenges of 2017 than as a champion?

Alternatively, if, by the end of the week, you’re feeling ready to actually do some proactive things and/or your digestive system is simply wrecked from the holidays, you could sign up for the Homemade Kombucha class at the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-Op (2820 R Street) on January 11 at 6 p.m. You’ll learn about the detoxifying powers of this fermented tea and leave with tools and knowledge you’ll need to be a ‘booch master at home. The cost is $25-$35 and you can register at https://sacfood.coop.
