Smashing pumpkins

Host a pumpkin-recycling station this Halloween

It’s the day after Halloween, time to throw that sagging jack-o’-lantern into the green-waste container. Uh, not so fast, trick-or-treaters! Your local waste managers do not want your rotting pumpkins in their green bins. So, what’s an eco-conscious reveler to do? The blog for the Home Energy Efficiency Team (HEET) of Arlington, Mass., has a great idea: Host a pumpkin-recycling station in your neighborhood. Visit the www.arlingtonheet.org site and download a pumpkin-recycling sign, hang it on a trash can in front of your house, and get ready to reap fall’s nitrogen-rich bounty.
