Everything’s better with bacon, right? It’s true for most savory things and these days, a lot of sweet ones, too. So it’s about time Sacramento got a bacon doughnut.

Thanks to Doughbot Donuts (2226 10th Street), which opened this weekend, we now have a maple-bacon doughnut and a bacon-apple fritter to compare.

Ironically, they also make a variety of vegan doughnuts. My favorite flavor, though, was The Dude, which was filled with Bavarian cream and glazed with Kahlua and vodka. It was the moistest pastry of the day and a great flavor combo. Doughbot already has a big Facebook following, and they sold out the first day by 8 a.m.! There are only some salvaged theater seats and an old vinyl couch, but Southside Park is two short blocks away (Eighth and W streets), with plenty of picnic tables.

While Sacramento is lucky to have lots of great mom-and-pop doughnut shops (I’m a big fan of Marie’s Donuts at 2950 Freeport Boulevard), we haven’t had anything too cutting edge, like Dynamo Donuts in San Francisco. I hope Doughbot can find its niche.
