Not many of us can turn a hobby into a livelihood, but that is exactly what Jim and Judy Harnish did four years ago. Jim enjoyed making candies for the holidays, which Judy arranged in elaborate gift boxes. The gifts were so impressive that the couple decided to chuck their jobs and establish the Fog Mountain Candy Company. Drop by the Q Street shop to watch the candies being prepared in small batches on the stove. Fog Mountain uses fresh, local nuts from Pedrick’s Produce in Dixon and chocolate from Guittard in the Bay Area. The company’s best seller is the White Toffee; a thick, crunchy almond toffee coated with white chocolate and chopped almonds. They also produce a number of other calorific confections, including traditional English toffee, chocolate peanut crunch, candied walnuts (great on salads) and pomegranate jelly. 2016 Q St., Sacramento; 448-4140; www.fogmountaincandy.com; Monday-Friday 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
