In light of recent—and ongoing—revelations about the extent of the National Security Agency’s gathering of Americans’ personal information from the Web, Internet security is a growing concern. Internet-activist organization Electronic Frontier Foundation has released a list of 10 easy security measures at Here are some highlights:

• Use an end-to-end encryption program, such as Off-the-Record (OTR) messaging, and encourage your friends to do the same. Encrypt your hard drive as well.

• Use strong passwords, and change them often.

• Keep extra-sensitive info safe by keeping it on an encrypted external hard drive, or a secondary computer you don’t connect to the Internet.
