RoadRunners in foul territory

Owners of Outlaws vow to take over franchise for rest of season

It’s beginning to look like St. George, Utah, is not the ideal spot for a baseball team. Earlier this week, the Golden Baseball League announced in a press release that the RoadRunners were broke. They were supposed to play in Chico this week (Tuesday through Thursday), but had to cancel because their ownership group, Hot Corner Baseball, can’t pay the bills.

The story isn’t over for the RoadRunners yet. Diamond Sports, which owns the Outlaws and the Yuma Scorpions, has come to the rescue, offering to take over daily operations of the St. George team so it can finish out the season.

In an article in the Deseret News, Hot Corner—the RoadRunners’ fourth owner—cited the inability to sell beer at games as a major factor in its failure.

“It simply makes no sense to operate a minor-league franchise without beer sales,” Hot Corner CEO Will Joyce told the newspaper.
