Why?

You can add Why? to the short list of musicians bringing a singular vision to their output. The band calls their music pop-inflected psychedelic folk-hop—and the label may fit their combination of rap, indie rock and socially conscious lyrics—but it doesn’t prepare you for their odd, left-field approach. Musically, the band ranges from acoustic-based folk-funk to light industrial noise to minimal grooves fueled by twinkling keyboards and sparse drum rhythms. But it’s lyricist Yoni Wolf’s unique delivery that grabs you. Equal parts white-boy rap, talking blues and rhythmic sing/speak, Wolf’s songs explore the disjointed experiences of a youth trying to deal with the insanity of the modern world with a virtuosic display of verbal dexterity and dark humor that’ll leave your head spinning.
