Thurs., May 09, Ghost Pines

Naked Lounge Downtown, 8 p.m., $5

The first track on Ghost Pines' self-titled EP starts off as a very sincere indie-folk song that sort of gently slides into a math-rock territory. It, on one hand, makes no sense, yet somehow is quite intuitive. This song is a great indicator of what to expect from Ghost Pines—in that anything goes with these guys. The band does have a tendency to bounce around between indie folk, math rock, prog rock and sometimes lengthy psychedelic breakdowns, but it really has no formula for when it will do what style and for how long. It's rare to see a band so proficient at complex instrumental jams and straightforward, heartfelt folk songs. 1111 H Street, www.facebook.com/ghostpines.
