Take Flight: Wings screening

Released in 1927, the visually breathtaking, emotionally resonant silent-era World War I aviation-romance classic Wings was the highest grossing film of the year. Former Lafayette Flying Corps pilot William A. Wellman directed this must-see extravaganza in which cameras were mounted in the cockpits for the actors to wield. The resulting film earned the first Academy Award for best picture. Now digitally restored with a rerecorded full-orchestra soundtrack and archival sound effects, this exhilarating story about two American airmen (Charles “Buddy” Rogers and Richard Arlen) and the woman (Clara Bow) they left behind receives a rare theatrical screening Wednesday, May 16. Century Stadium 14 Theatre, 1590 Ethan Way; (800) 326-3264, ext. 922; Century Folsom 14 Theatre, 261 Iron Point Road in Folsom; (916) 353-5247.
