Harley White’s arts and performance space, Joe’s Style Shop, on J Street across from Cesar Chavez Plaza, was once a clothing store run by a haberdasher named, well, Joe; he sold the coolest lime-green sharkskin suits back when the Plaza across the street was known informally as “Gallo Park.” And What’s Up, Tiger Lily?, the 1960s Japanese spy film that Woody Allen appropriated and dubbed in his own dialogue, is one of our favorite films in the Japanese spy movies overdubbed by neurotic nebbishes genre. So when we heard that local artist Kevin Carey was exhibiting at Joe’s (920 J St.) this month, and that one of his paintings was titled “Tiger Lily,” we became motivated to communicate this revelation to you, the masses. The exhibition runs through August 20; a Second Saturday reception will be held Saturday, July 14 from 6-9 p.m. For more information call 646-6929.
