Although Tom Monteith is better known for his larger abstract pieces, the painter and CSUS faculty member also likes to knock off the occasional plein aire acrylic. A number of these are currently on display at Jayjay, a gallery at 2906 Franklin Blvd. in Curtis Park. “Plein aire”—while not an English-sourced term and therefore a possibly intimidating one to we Sammy Hagar enthusiasts—simply means that the piece is painted, generally al fresco or outdoors, using natural light; a proper plein aire typically is completed on site before the light changes. Here, Monteith’s landscapes evoke this part of California with olive, gold and terra cotta tones; Ron Schmeck fans may appreciate the occasional depiction of a recreational vehicle in a campground setting. The show runs through July 7. Jayjay is open Wednesday through Saturday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. or by appointment. For information, call 456-7650.
