She’s always a princess to us

There’s nothing wrong with your eyes, so stop trying to pluck them out. It’s just Mrs. Baden-Rotten, flanked by her two unlovely daughters.

This year’s version of the Sacramento Theater Company’s holiday evergreen is genuinely zesty and fun, like meeting a jovial friend you’ve missed. Tall, menacing William Elsman is a hoot as the wicked stepmother (poking out a long tongue that would do an iguana proud). Gregg Coffin’s songs remain toe tappers, even after 10 years. Director Peggy Shannon inserts new topical jokes, and more interactive scenes. Cinderella’s flexible format graciously accommodates updates (in ways that the rigid Christmas Carol doesn’t). And the supporting cast is packed with appealing kids.
