Sac’s got swing
Sacramento, CA 95818
Sacramento has a vintage feel. Perhaps “vintage” is our ol’ town cliché, but it’s hard to avoid—whether drinking an old vintage wine from a neighboring county in the Valley, shopping for vintage clothes in a vintage building, listening to vintage swing and Dixieland jazz at the Sacramento Jazz Festival & Jubilee, or cruising down to the California Automobile Museum in a classic vintage car. Let’s be honest: We love our vintage. We’re probably in the dictionary next to the word (whatever the actual definition is).
So why not celebrate it? This Saturday, you can head down to So-Cal Speed Shop for Sacramento SwingTime, an annual vintage car show and music festival. It will show off more than just hot rods and swing music, though. There will be a Rides & Dolls Pin-up Pageant, headed up by pin-up and car photographer Marilee Caruso; food and drink by Hideaway Bar & Grill; and a pin-striping jam showcasing car-panel art.
The music lineup is impressive as well, featuring the old-school rockabilly styles of Devil Doll, Deke Dickerson, Hillbilly Hellcats, Cockfight Kings and La Cholita. Swing- and blues-influenced music will be provided by Lost Dog Found, the Twighlight Drifters, Jenny Lynn and Her Real Gone Daddies, and the Afterlife. Spicing up the pot will be swing-dance lessons by Johnny Ochoa and music by DJ Rigatony.
Sacramento SwingTime happens Saturday, June 25, from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. at the So-Cal Speed Shop warehouse, 5849 88th Street. There is no registration fee for the car show. Pre-1964 American cars participating in the show can park at the venue from 9 to 11 a.m. General admission is $20, and the event is free for children.
