Swine-flu outbreak in Folsom or up-and-coming screamo meme?

Saturday, September 12, 6:30 p.m.; $8 advance, $12 at the door. Club Retro, 6521 Hazel Avenue in Orangevale; www.myspace.com/killingthepartymusic.

Saturday is a 10-band hardcore fest at Club Retro, and Sunday is the day of the lord, so you can hardcore dance to your flailing Sharpied arms’ delight, then hit up church the next day and repent for your straightedge sins. One standout on the bill is Folsom’s Killing the Party, a band with very young members who play ridiculously heavy and mature screamo that’s actually not too bad (i.e., vaguely listenable). OK, so I dig one of their songs, “Take Seven Gulps of This.” It begins with a Bach-like synth run before unleashing furious palm-muted chops, singer Zac Becker shouting, “Put away the fake smile and try some honesty for once / your kind disgusts me” over an almost-thrash tempo featuring hardcore riffs and unexpectedly ’80s keys. And then comes the song’s bridge, which sounds like … the New Humans!? And an outro that’s Pantera meets Yes!? Man, the suburbs are jacked up.
