Strokes are frighteningly common occurrences in the United States—something Devin Dearth knows all too well. The businessman and champion bodybuilder suffered a stroke in 2007, leaving him paralyzed and unable to walk. His story is highlighted in the film 9000 Needles, which screens Sunday afternoon at the Community Asian Theatre of the Sierra in Nevada City.

The award-winning film, which toured festivals across the United States, is directed by Devin’s older brother, Doug, a veteran Los Angeles film director. It follows Devin as he was rushed to intensive care following his stroke, to his journey home, where trouble with the health-insurance system stymied his recovery.

Doug suggested his brother travel to China to participate in a holistic treatment combining Western and traditional Chinese medicine, and intense physical therapy. His hope: that a camera crew in Devin’s face would subconsciously motivate his brother to recover quickly. See for yourself if it worked.

The screening is accompanied by speeches from Doug Dearth and licensed acupuncturists, Drs. Gang Zhao Dong and Michelle Lau.
