The Nutcracker is a December staple in many cities, and the Sacramento region is fortunate to have multiple productions in addition to the one produced by the Sacramento Ballet—including two unique adaptations this weekend. Since 2000, Pamela Hayes Classical Ballet Theatre has presented a classic version, with comedic twists and annual updates for all ages. Dancer Michael Onstad, who reprises his role as Herr Drosselmeyer, will perform alongside many regional dancers. The historic Guild Theater hosts NaTalia Johnson Conservatory and Girls Self-Esteem Program's second production of Nutcracker in Oak Park. Johnson's unique take begins in the Evans' home, not the Silberhaus'. What sets this production apart from all others is the community participation (including a La Quinta Inn general manager, a sheriff's department employee and a local bodybuilder), the locale and the inclusion of Motown classics, hip-hop and contemporary dance music alongside traditional music and ballet.
