Honey, baby

Matt Tucker and John Foster raise bees in Matt’s backyard as Two Drones Honey. Here are some things you might not know about beekeeping:

“The city of Sacramento allows you to keep two hives per property. Most city codes don’t usually specify beekeeping. Apparently there used to be huge apiaries in South Land Park.

“We were able to capture our whole colony from local feral bees. We got on a swarm list at Sacramento Beekeeping Supplies (on 21st and X), and we got a call when someone saw a cluster of bees in their yard. The bees were looking for a new home, so they were pretty docile and we transported them in a cardboard box.

“You can combine many colonies in the same hive by separating them with two sheets of newspaper. By the time the worker bees have chewed through the paper, the commotion has died down, and the unavoidable carnage is much less severe.”
