When you work in an office, it’s easy to get into a lunch routine. While working a job in San Francisco, I ordered the same Vietnamese noodle salad so often that the restaurant staff called out, “Number 40?” when I walked in. At a different job, a good friend and I went for vegetable soba (Japanese buckwheat noodle) soup at least twice a week. Now I work and usually eat lunch at home, but I still love noodles. So, when that same friend visited Sacramento, there was one clear choice for lunch: New Edokko, where you can find any sort of Japanese noodle dish you want. I had the wonderful ten-zarusoba—cold noodles with dipping sauce and a side of excellent, light tempura. My friend stuck with our onetime favorite: a huge bowl of broth with vegetables, soba and chunks of tofu. It was delicious, just like old times, and potentially habit forming. 1724 Broadway, (916) 448-2828.
