The American River Parkway offers many pleasures to the cyclist, one being the close proximity of in Fair Oaks Village. Just pedal across the charming Old Fair Oaks Bridge and into the village, swerving to avoid the roosters that have the run of the place. The breakfast menu includes savory frittatas, three-egg omelets, blueberry pancakes, fresh-baked goods and French toast. We particularly enjoyed the roasted herb potatoes, cut into small chunks with slivers of red bell pepper, as well as the fresh biscuits. The lunch menu includes a tempting array of sandwiches, salads and pastas as well as vegetarian and meat dishes. The small bistro is just the right scale for the village, where bicycling and walking are the most appropriate modes of transportation. So, turn off the cell phone, leave the car in the garage, and pedal toward your reward: a bistro meal prepared from scratch. 7984 California Avenue in Fair Oaks, (916) 966-6384.
