There’s a misconception that celebrating International Migratory Bird Day requires people to wear binoculars around their neck, white sunscreen on their nose and tan cargo shorts with a birding book in their pocket. Not true.

To mark the special day, bird lovers of all descriptions will descend upon Beach Lake picnic area near Freeport for the Walk on the Wildside outdoor festival. Sponsored by the Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, the free event features live wild-animal presentations, folk music, a petting farm, outdoor barbecue and other wild ’n’ crazy shenanigans. Saturday, May 9, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m, at the Beach Lake picnic area near Freeport. Visit www.fws.gov/stonelakes or call (916) 775-4420 for more information.
