Can time be packaged?

This month the Solomon Dubnick Gallery offers a selection of paintings and sculptures that fall under a double theme. First, the artists had to focus their work around the concept of “packaged time”—the idea that time has been, and still is, perceived as packaged, measured and manipulated. The second focus was on the “golden section,” a time-tested canon of proportion that’s said to offer the most pleasing results. Artists in the show were asked to use 10 inches as the base measurement and to compute the rectangle based on the ratio of 1 to 1.618. Twenty-six of the gallery’s artists—including Steve Bradford, Mick Sheldon, Larry Welden, Sheldon Greenberg and others—chose to participate, and the results show the artists’ willingness to take on a challenge and, from it, to create significant work. Packaged Time, at Solomon Dubnick Gallery, 2131 Northrop Ave., runs through Dec. 31.
