Bardo Pond + Tom Carter

4/23/03

There’s something pretty weird happening in the mid-Atlantic states. A variety of acoustic and electric musicians have been putting out records that are being labeled collectively as “psych-folk.” Two of the pioneers of this particular subgenre are Philadelphia-based Bardo Pond and guitar improviser Tom Carter (of psych-folk outfit Charalambides). Put them together, and you’ll find yourself listening to a truly moving album. Bardo Pond’s comparatively more straightforward rock edge plays well with Carter’s own penchant for drone, with the end result sounding like a better version of Pink Floyd’s groundbreaking A Saucerful of Secrets.
