Super Bowl party, eco-style

How to make your game-day bash extra green

This year’s big game is sure to be a pretty green affair here in Chico. In fact, the city is already decked out in the colors of the Green Bay Packers, thanks to hometown hero Aaron “The Arm” Rodgers.

While you’re in the spirit, fans, how about going really green for the annual championship game? This year, try hosting an eco-friendly Super Bowl party. It’s not too difficult. Here are three simple tips to get the ball rolling:

1. Class it up by forgoing single-use items, such as plastic or Styrofoam cups, paper plates and plastic utensils. Instead, use your everyday dishware.

2. If you must decorate, purchase items you’ll reuse in the future. If you need, say, a cheesehead hat, get crafty and make one yourself from recycled cardboard.

3. Serving locally sourced food and drinks is a snap here. Shop at the Saturday Farmers’ Market for fresh fruits and veggies. Head to almost any local grocer for Lundberg Family Farms’ rice chips, R.W. Knudsen Family beverages, and, of course, Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. beers.
