No fees at national parks

Mark your calendar for the year’s fee-free days

Get ready to mark your calendar, and prepare to explore and appreciate the natural environment. Last week, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced more than a dozen dates on which the National Park Service will waive the entrance fees to its parks.

The first of 17 fee-free dates just occurred over the weekend of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. But there are plenty more opportunities during this year. And there are plenty of places to explore—394 national parks, to be precise. The nearest to Chico are the Lassen Volcanic National Park and Whiskeytown National Recreation Area.

Here are the remaining fee-free dates:

National Park Week: April 16-24
First day of summer: June 21
National Public Lands Day: Sept. 24
Week of Veterans Day: Nov. 11-13
