Spore

Maxis/EA

God created the world in six days; Maxis took almost four years to release Spore. The life simulator that allows you to build a species from the cellular level to a space-faring civilization delivers on its promise of being awesome but not on the hype that its delay created. From the beginning, as you swim around in primordial ooze in a sort of beautifully created 3-D Pac-Man on steroids, it’s clear the game is rushing toward the space stage. Despite the reported 50,000 planets to explore, befriend or conquer, the game remains a single-player online game. Without the social interaction provided by some games, you’ll feel very alone in the universe—but then again it’s lonely at the top. The sheer scope of the game is mind-bogglingly fun and while it may be evolutionary, Spore is not revolutionary.
