Allergy season is here, which helps make Butte County even snottier than usual. There are a number of ways to relieve a stuffy nose, beyond the use of a handkerchief, tissue or the socially disturbing jettison of mucus onto a public sidewalk. A stuffed nose is caused by inflamed sinus blood vessels. Here are five ways to clear those passages:

• Use a humidifier—humid air relieves the inflammation.

• Take a steamy shower—same reason as above.

• Keep hydrated—liquids help thin nasal mucus.

• Saline spray—thins mucus, but after three days’ use can make it worse.

• Warm compress—soak a towel in warm water and place it over your nose.
