Butte County tests its new oil-containment equipment

Today (June 9), representatives from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Office of Spill Prevention and Response will be on Lake Oroville conducting oil-containment training with members of the Cal Fire-Butte County.

According to Mary Ann Aldrich, Cal Fire public information officer, the training is part of a $30,000 grant from OSPR “to purchase a trailer and the equipment needed to contain an oil spill.” The orientation will include the deployment of a boom—a barrier that floats in the water and would prevent a spill from spreading.

Aldrich explained that the department’s new equipment can be used for any oil spills in water, whether static bodies (like Lake Oroville) or flowing sources such as the Feather River.
