Newest justice appeals to greenies

Green groups give Kagan OK

Dozens of environmental groups signed a letter recently applauding the Senate’s 63-37 vote to appoint Solicitor General Elena Kagan to the U.S. Supreme Court, according to the Environment News Service.

Forty-five groups gave the newest justice their approval, including the League of Conservation Voters, Earthjustice, the Sierra Club, the Wilderness Society, Audubon and Greenpeace USA, to name a few. The letter noted that while the groups do not expect Kagan (pictured) to always take their side, her history and confirmation-hearing testimony show that she will interpret environmental issues fairly and will uphold laws that protect wildlife and the environment.

Kagan could tip the scales in the court. Currently, four of the justices are skeptical about environmental and wildlife issues, while the other four tend to show more concern.
