Mosquito fog beginning

Health officials warn that West Nile season has arrived

Fogging to kill mosquitoes was scheduled to start Tuesday night (June 2) in Magalia, but weather conditions turned out to be unfavorable. The Ridge community was selected to be first to get the controversial treatment primarily to control tree-hole mosquitoes that carry heartworm disease that affects dogs, but Butte County Mosquito and Vector Control District officials said West Nile virus suppression was also a goal.

In any event, the county Public Health Department wants residents to know the West Nile season is here and to take precautions. For a complete list of same, go to www.buttecounty.net/publichealth. The public is also asked to report any dead birds to the state at www.westnile.ca.gov or by calling a toll-free line at 1-877-968-2473.

Residents who wish to know when and where fogging is going to take place can sign up for e-mail advisories at www.bcmvcd.com/advisory.php.

So far, as of the CN&R’s deadline Wednesday (June 3), no cases of the virus have been reported in Butte County.
