Honoring a life lost

Speakers focus on homelessness, domestic violence in remembering woman killed on campus last week

Community members attended a Chico State faculty- and staff-organized vigil in remembrance of Linda Blacksten, who was killed on the campus grounds last week. A dozen or so people spoke about Blacksten, though no one had known her beyond a brief chat. That, several speakers said, was the real tragedy—because she was homeless, no one had taken the time to see her as a human being, as a daughter and perhaps a wife, sister or cousin. Representatives from Catalyst Domestic Violence Services reminded attendees that abuse is one of the leading causes of homelessness for women, and that Blacksten was the third homeless woman in as many years to be violently killed in Chico.
