Walk for Freedom

Dozens take to Chico’s streets to protest human trafficking

Dozens of people gathered Saturday (Oct. 20) in downtown Chico and marched to bring awareness to the problem of human trafficking. For the Walk for Freedom, planned in conjunction with events around the world as organized through the Australia-based A21 Campaign, the group marched through downtown in the hopes of enlightening the general public to the fact that human trafficking is taking place across the world, including in all 50 states. Millions of people are enslaved in the world today, they said, and the industry, though underground, generates over $100 billion. The Walk for Freedom aims to move governments to abolish slavery, as only 1 percent of the enslaved are ever rescued, according to several international agencies, including the U.S. Department of State.
