Where to go tonight

The lived-in face of the mighty Magic Slim.

Blues promoter Mike Balma likes to cook up a mess of barbecue for his Sunday-afternoon shows at the Sacramento Horsemen’s Club. But that venue only works well in the cooler months. When it heats up, Balma does his shows elsewhere. On Saturday, May 1, he’ll be cooking at the Blue Lamp (1400 Alhambra Boulevard), for an early show, from 7 to 10 p.m., featuring Chicago blues with Magic Slim & the Teardrops. The 21-and-over show’s cover is $10; come hungry and save some room for Balma’s famous sweet-potato pie. After 10 p.m., at the same venue, Warp 11 and Soul Taco will play; the cover for that is $6. And two nights before (Thursday, April 29), across the grid at Old Ironsides (1901 10th Street), Chicago’s infamous Urge Overkill, the band that helped ignite the snarky 1970s buttrock revival in the 1990s, will bring the noise, with the equally infamous local band Dungeons & Drag Queens and the Last Vegas opening. That show’s at 9 p.m.; tickets are $12.
