Last week, Deftones’ Frank Delgado, also part of DecibelDevils, kicked off Straight, No Chaser, deejay CrookOne and fellow DecibelDevils’ new night at R Street Corridor hot spot Shady Lady Saloon. The event’s promo poster—a cool retro-meets-Mingus yellow flier designed by Laura Edmisten at Asbestos Press—says the tunes will skew jazz, fusion and Afrobeat. And what a concept: a deejay night that doesn’t placate to Top 40, electro, dubstep, house or trance. Instead, be ready for the likes of Antibalas and, well, more Charles Mingus, perhaps.
