Catch the visual arts crème de la crème from the Natomas Charter School Performing and Fine Arts Academy and Natomas High School in the 10th annual juried Creative Self-Expression Show. Up until April 7 at The Great Frame Up, located at 1590 Howe Avenue, the show demonstrates an amazing scope of artistic vision and a mastery of medium born under teenage hands. Allen Freeny’s “Photographic Attitude” freeze-frames his heart and soul in a neon orange, stylized self-portrait. A Warholian close-up, with his third eye (a camera) on his face like a natural appendage, reveals his artistic drive. Tierney Daniels collages pen-and-ink cutouts on an atmospheric watercolor background in “Culture Among Us.” Combined, the pieces enhance an African woman’s portrait and emphasize her cultural dress. But the woman holds a ball that imprisons an upside-down, modern-day female, reflecting a powerful commentary on women’s role in today’s world, regardless of color.
