Ripping guitar solos were alive and well as recently as, uh, the ’90s. This was when major labels such as Capitol Records put out albums such as Ah Via Musicom by ax virtuosos such as Eric Johnson, who practically had a hit single in 1990 with “Cliffs of Dover.” Surely your remember the track’s flagship noodling? Ba-doo-da-di-ba-do-da-day-ba-do-da-duh-ba-do-da-do-do-do-do—that one! It was one of those runs you looked forward to showing-off with at Skip’s Music—until some jackass one-upped you with prodigious Yngwie Malmsteen wanking. Sigh. Anyway, Johnson still kills it; spend your Wednesday evening taking in one of the best. 2708 J Street, www.ericjohnson.com.
