I imagine the best course of action to get noticed in the music industry would be to try to stand out, not surround yourself with even more talented people. Yet this is not the case when it comes to John Vanderslice. He has been spending his illustrious career helping others jump-start theirs. Vanderslice’s all-analog Bay recording studio, Tiny Telephone, has overseen the emergence of bands such as Spoon, Death Cab for Cutie and Deerhoof. Despite all the shining stars distracting from his own talent, V-Slice has managed a healthy career, putting out seven studio albums, constant touring, and the surrounding talent seems to have helped him master his modern-pop sound. 1517 21st Street, www.myspace.com/johnvanderslice.
