Preview: Amazing Grace at Harris Center

Amazing Grace is a recent musical—opened on Broadway in 2015, now touring—based on the life of John Newton (1725-1807). An Englishman who was the captain of a sailing ship that carried slaves from Africa; he underwent a change of heart and became an abolitionist. Newton is the man who wrote the words to the famous hymn (also this show’s final number) in 1779. This week is the musical’s first appearance in this area.
