Midtown’s True Love Coffeehouse, at 2406 J Street, is not only a good place to get coffee and treats but also one of the finer venues for live music in town, with local and traveling musical acts occupying the stage many nights of the week. On top of this, the venue exhibits art, and every December, it puts on The Rock Star Art Show, in which the participants are local musicians. It’s always fun because the public that normally would witness these folks playing music gets a glimpse at an alternative side of expression. This year, it’s even more of a must-see. Instead of just showing whatever kind of visual art local musicians wanted to display, the coffeehouse asked them to do self-portraits. That right there is enough to get people to see the show, but it’s extra satisfying that the show doesn’t disappoint. Some of the musicians are quite good artists; the rest, if nothing else, are vastly entertaining.
