Local gallery b. sakata garo is always a pleasure to visit, for various reasons, one of which is its selection of artists. Quite often, one gets the opportunity to see edgy work by local university professors and Bay Area artists who probably wouldn’t get a showing around here otherwise. And sometimes, like this month, one can be treated to work by up-and-coming artists of a similar quality. Art Bowl III features work by 12 graduate students, carefully gleaned from California State University, Sacramento; Mills College; San Francisco State University; San Jose State University; the University of California, Berkeley; and the University of California, Davis. Styles and media range, but the pieces still retain a sense of freshness and sophistication. Each piece illustrates artists who are not only well-educated but also passionate. And though I’m sure these artists’ works will continue to change as the artists develop, it’s exciting to see a bunch of them together at this stage.
