Melanie Weir opened the Gluten Free Specialty Grocery Store (2612 J Street, Suite 1; www.facebook.com/glutenfreespecialty) a few years back to give locals with food allergies and celiac disease a place to shop. Now, she's planning on growing the business to include a gluten-free cafe, kitchen and restaurant called Roots Creative Kitchen. To do so, she's launched an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign (www.igg.me/at/roots) hoping to raise $60,000. It'll be combined with an additional $90,020 of funding already invested by other local individuals and companies. The Indiegogo campaign runs through April 24, and if all goes to plan, construction could begin in May and Roots Creative Kitchen could be open by the end of the year. But first, to raise awareness of (and funds for) the campaign, there's a “nachos and ice cream party” happening at the grocery store at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 11. It's $15 for either nachos or ice cream, or $25 for both. Find out more at www.facebook.com/rootscreativekitchen.
