It’s a fact. Put a picture of a cute dog on something, and you’ll grab people’s attention. Case in point: Last weekend, I could not stop staring at the golden-retriever puppy printed on the logo for the toilet tissue in the cart in front of me at the grocery store. Granted, I was pretty much just trying to figure out why someone would put a puppy on toilet tissue: Do dogs use toilet paper? Was the company specifically trying to capture the dog-owner demographic? Was there something about seeing a puppy that makes one want to buy bathroom products?

Nope. That puppy was there solely for the simple fact that most of us are helpless to look away from a goofy, furry doggy face. It’s an undeniable part of the human condition (and probably the only reason you’re still reading this calendar item). So, why not surrender to your instincts and puppy-watch all you want at the second annual Bow-Wow Bash?

Bring your dog to the Penryn countryside this Saturday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. for an afternoon of games and canine communion. Games include trick contests, a doggie dash, a carrot crawl (huh?), a pooch smooch (yikes!), a ball catch and bobbing for hot dogs. The day also includes on-site microchipping, pet-product demos and a barbecue lunch for humans.

Registration, $25 for one dog and $15 for a second dog, begins at 10 a.m. Proceeds benefit the Pet Play Day Inc. animal-welfare group. All dogs must be on a leash and up-to-date on their vaccines. The Bow-Wow Bash is located at 7535 Ridgeview Lane in Penryn. Visit www.bowwowbash.com or call (916) 663-2841 for more info.
