It’s in the voice

Denyce Graves

Denyce Graves

The human voice can be a beautiful thing, and precious few of us are blessed with magnificent instruments. Consider Denyce Graves, a mezzo-soprano who will appear at the Sacramento Community Theater at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, as part of the UC Davis Presents 2000-2001 season. Although Graves is considered by some to be a comer in the opera world, she’s no Puccini-only diva; her eclectic tastes range all over the map. Graves’ earthy vocal cords breathe new life into French melodie, German lieder, Broadway pop, jazz and spirituals, in addition to the standard repertoire. Sound like an interesting night on the town? We thought so. Tickets are $40, $33 and $25 general and $20, $16 and $12.50 for students and children. They’re available through the UC Davis Campus Box Office, (530) 752-1915, and at all BASS outlets, 766-BASS.
