The Merchant of Venice

“The quality of mercy is not strained,” Shakespeare tells us. But when the argument is between a Jewish moneylender (Ed Claudio, brilliantly playing Shylock) and a Christian who promised a pound of flesh if he didn't pay his debt—how strong an argument is it that human beings should be merciful because God is merciful? Shakespeare's still controversial drama touches on love, family, fear, hatred and religious bigotry.
