High-end for cheap(ish)

Hawks restaurant in Granite Bay is a bit of a haul, but it always warrants a trip. And if you thought it’s out of your price range, it has instituted Sunday Suppers to make it more affordable. Every Sunday since February, the chefs have a set menu of four inventive courses of comfort food full of seasonal produce. I recently enjoyed spring onion and green garlic soup, housemade gnocchi with nettle purée and black trumpet mushrooms, Maine monkfish and Delta asparagus, and pineapple upside-down cake with toffee sauce. The gnocchi and fish courses were served family style, in large platters for the whole table. The whole wine list is also discounted 25 percent for these dinners. Dinners cost $35 to $40 per adult and $20 per child, so search the couch cushions if you must, but scrape together the coin and make it up there for a Sunday Supper soon.
