Though described as “math rock,” you don’t have to be a nerd to get down to the Speed of Sound in Seawater. All you need to enjoy this Elk Grove trio is an appetite for the unexpected—and even jarring sounds. But in a good way. The band manages to string together slow, melodic crooning with primal screams, lightning-fast arpeggios and more time changes than a flight to Shanghai. Yet somehow, the band gets the clusterfuck of sound to flow in a way that’s fresh and intriguing. Skeptical?
