Eight Gigs: Frightened Rabbit

Fri., May 27, 8 p.m., Ace of Spades, $17-$20

Some Frightened Rabbit fans might long for the early 2000s, when its unpolished, ramshackle indie-folk sound—along with Scott Hutchison’s wry sense of humor—created the musical embodiment of a charming, working-class, self-destructive drunk. Now, the group continues down the course of studio gloss and carefully crafted structures. But what is remarkable is that even within these constraints, it’s managed to create a dark, self-loathing record. Yet as the title suggests, it is a painting, and therefore comes across as more of an art project instead of an open, festering wound. 1417 R Street, www.frightenedrabbit.com.
