Deep Sea 3D

Rated 4.0

After being in something of a rut for a while, the IMAX 3-D format is back at the top of its game with this fascinating tour of the world’s oceans and the bizarre, alien-looking life forms found there: jellyfish, starfish, crabs, coral, sharks, sardines, shrimp, sea urchins—an amazing variety of creatures. Directed and photographed by Howard Hall, the movie profits from narration that is clever and highly informative—and read with occasionally breathless relish by Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet. Mercifully, Hall keeps the it’s-all-your-fault eco-nagging to a minimum, concentrating on the feeding habits of marine life (including some highly convincing crunch-and-munch sound effects). Some shots of aggressive Humboldt squids attacking the camera may send the easily frightened groping for the exits.
