Comic (book) relief

Holy smokes, Batman, it’s Free Comic Book Day!

Holy smokes, Batman, it’s Free Comic Book Day!

I first became a fan of comic books because my brother read them. I fondly recall creeping into his room and sneaking a peek at his small collection of Marvel Comics like X-Men, Spiderman and Iron Man. Looking at those glossy pages, I learned how to read, how to look at art and the concept of character development. Later, Calvin and Hobbes introduced me to environmentalism, philosophy and politics. As an adult, I continue to enjoy watching comic-book heroes come to life on television, reading adult graphic novels like The Watchmen and even books about comics, namely the Pulitzer Prize-winning Michael Chabon novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay.

Free Comic Book Day, happening Saturday, is an affordable chance for kids, enthusiasts and comic-book newcomers to enter the world of comics.
