Calling Flintstone and Rubble

Obviously some sort of whimsical wooden machine?

Obviously some sort of whimsical wooden machine?

Inspired by the Lascaux cave paintings, Chris Daubert has built two square “caves” with mirrored walls in the center of the Davis Art Center, at 1919 F St. in Davis. Inside the caves, Greek columns, maps of hurricanes and strange alphabets are painted on the mirrors. Colored lights blink behind them, highlighting portions of the images, which are illuminated by whimsical wooden machines positioned outside the caves. Through a high-speed DSL connection, visitors at Explorit Science Center three miles away may compose messages that will appear on the caves’ mirrored walls as well. A Certain Principle: Installation by Chris Daubert runs through October 12; gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday.
