Bird’s-eye view

Not only wise, but great.

Not only wise, but great.

Do you know what a blue grosbeak is? Here’s a hint: they’re blue. Another? They’re migrating through Sacramento this winter. If you’re still in the dark, it’s time to visit Stone Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. The trail to their newest wildlife viewing platform (which is 12 feet high in the tree canopy!) will be open this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Hike at your own pace through the wetlands. Hang out in the treetops and you’ll see egrets, great horned owls and grosbeaks a plenty. The trail begins at the Elk Grove Boulevard gate adjacent to I-5. Bring binoculars and water and be sure to dress warmly. Call 775-4421 for more information.
